DEEP, DARK, AND DELICIOUS… DOES CHOCOLATE = HAPPINESS?

By Victoria Rasman, Registered Holistic Nutritionist

When it comes to indulgent foods, dark chocolate is ranking pretty high on the health scale for it’s extra benefits (besides the taste).  It has several chemical compounds that have a positive effect on your mood, including one called “phenylethylamine” (PEA). This is the same chemical your brain creates when you feel like you’re falling in love. PEA encourages your brain to release endorphins, so eating some dark chocolate will make you feel happier.
A small bar of chocolate with 70% + cocoa also contains high levels of iron, magnesium, potassium, manganese and fibre. Dark chocolate is loaded with organic compounds that are biologically active, and function as antioxidants (specifically phenols and flavonoids).

Here are a few more benefits of the sweet stuff:

• May improve blood flow and lower blood pressure – benefits cardiovascular system

• Can reduce stress levels • Good for the brain – increases blood flow to the brain and the heart, improving cognitive function

• Reduces insulin resistance, another common risk for many diseases like heart disease and diabetes

• Contains the mild stimulant theobromine, which can strengthen tooth enamel (but is harmful to dogs!)

• Benefits the Skin! Healthful compounds (such as epicatechins, catechins, procyanidins, and other flavonoids) boost circulation in small capillaries in the skin.

Don’t feel so guilty this Valentine’s Day when you’re unwrapping a sweet little treat. As with any dessert, however, chocolate should be consumed in moderation. Incorporate a few squares of organic dark chocolate into your home made trail mix once and a while; the extra kick is nutritiously satisfying, and will curb/stomp those afternoon work munchies.
